2014 Letter From the President

Dear Colleagues,

As the incoming President of the Alabama Vascular Society, I would like to take the opportunity to highlight our mission statement:  To promote interest in and provide education in the field of vascular surgery within the state of Alabama. As we move forward into 2014, I want to bring to your attention a few important areas that Alabama Vascular Society can help as the voice to move this goal forward.

  • 2014 Annual Meeting:  Our 2014 Annual Alabama Vascular Society will be held on May 30, 2014 at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center, off of 280 across the street from Birmingham Marriott.  Our honored guest speaker will be Dr. William M. Marston, M.D., Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC.  Dr. Marston has specialty clinical and research interests in endovascular surgery, limb preservation, wound care, vein disorders, and dialysis access.  In addition to his presentation, there will be a variety of presentations given by our members.  There will be excellent opportunity to tap into Dr. Marston’s expertise, plus the opportunity to network with other vascular surgeons in Alabama.  A call for abstracts and specific agenda will follow later this Spring, and I encourage your attendance to what should be an outstanding vascular educational opportunity.
  • Membership Campaign:  Alabama Vascular Society is made up of vascular surgeons, specialists, and nurses residing in the state of Alabama.  While our membership status has been relatively stable over the past few years, there are many vascular specialists in our state who are not members.  I wanted to encourage all current members to invite providers in their area that are caring for vascular patients to join the society.  Many vascular care givers in the state still do not know that the society exists, so please spread the word.
  • Medical Student Travel Grant:  This grant was established in 2011 for medical students to stimulate academic inspiration in vascular surgery, promote educational and professional exchange, and foster development of interest in vascular surgery as a future potential career specialty.  Grant support will provide the recipient with the opportunity to attend one of the major national vascular surgery society meetings and participate in the annual meeting of the Alabama Vascular Society.   Our 2014 Student Traveling Grant recipients are Andrew Schneider from the University of South Alabama and Matthew May from the University of Alabama – Birmingham.
  • Website:  Please visit our current website: http://alvascular.com. The website was established a few years ago to help communicate to our members and to provide some basic vascular education to Alabama patients with vascular problems.  While the site is still evolving, if you have additional content suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact our Administrator.

I hope to see you all at the upcoming annual meeting.

Sincerely,

Marc A. Passman, M.D.

2013 AVS Annual Meeting

The 2013 AVS annual meeting will be held on May 24th at the Birmingham Marriott Hotel.  Dinner will be to follow at Flemings Steak House.  Our honored quest speaker is Dr. Thomas S. Huber, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Chief of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy at the University of Florida College of Medicine.  Dr. Huber has interests in all aspects of Vascular Surgery and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Vascular Surgery.  He is best known for his work related to dialysis access and is funded by the NIH for his work with dialysis fistula creation and maturation.  In addition to his presentation, there will be a variety of excellent presentations to be given by our members.  There will be something on the agenda that will interest everyone.

As with last year, I wanted to encourage all members to invite physicians in their area that are caring for vascular patients to join the society.  Many care givers in the state still do not know that the society exists, so please spread the word.  In addition, I would encourage all to consider joining the Society for Vascular Surgery.  The society is your voice to Congress and continues to work hard to protect our interests and profession.

I hope to see you all at the annual meeting.

2012 AVS Annual Meeting

The 2012 Alabama Vascular Society meeting will be held on May 18th at the Birmingham Marriott Hotel.  Dinner will be to follow at Flemings Steak House.  I expect this years meeting to be one of best meetings we have ever had.  Our honored quest speaker is Dr. Hazim Safi, M.D., Professor and Chair of the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston.  As you know he is a world leader in the management of thoracic aortic pathology, in particular repair of thoracoadbdominal aortic aneurysms.  In addition to his presentation there are a variety of excellent presentations to be given by our members.  The range topics is broad and includes management of iliac vein and IVC thrombosis, persistent sciatic artery, and recurrent venous insufficiency.  There will something on the agenda that will interest everyone.

The new website for the society is now active.  Our intent is to list all of the members of the society and link to their practice website.  At the meeting and in a mail out to follow we will be asking members if they wish to be listed and if they wish to have a link to their website.  If you do not respond you will not be listed.  Please look for this survey and the mailing to follow.

Lastly, I wanted to encourage all members to invite physicians in their area that are caring for vascular patients to join the society.  Many care givers in the state do not know that the society exists, so please spread the word.  In addition, I would encourage all to consider joining the Society for Vascular Surgery.  The society is your voice to Congress and is working hard to protect our interests and profession.

I hope to see you all at the annual meeting.
